Merdeka Square is located right in front of Sultan Abdul Samad Building. This happens to be the place where hoisting of the national flag took place for the 1st time after Malaysia was declared an independent country in 957. The place used to be a cricket ground during the colonial times and the cricket pitch is still there along with the club. Several historic buildings surround the place including the famous, St Mary’s Church. The convenient location of the square makes it easy for the locals as well as tourists to get to the place and spend some nice time sitting around and watching the world go by.
